Plants for shade
A shaded spot — under a tree, against a north-facing wall, between two buildings — has different needs than a bed in full sun: less dramatic flowering, but often denser foliage and better tolerance of the drier surface soil caused by nearby tree roots. Mulching limits weed competition and retains moisture, which matters where rain filters through less easily under a leaf canopy.
